We were the last ones to get in the van. Reached Tulcan at 3:10 pm; we were dropped at the bus terminal. A bus to Quito was ready to leave at 3:20; the ticket was $4.8 per person. Our tickets showed the assigned seat numbers. On boarding the bus we found other people sitting in our seats; showed them the tickets, they reluctantly got up and moved back.
